Stainless steel 317LN is a nitrogen alloyed austenitic stainless steel having high nitrogen content than other austenitic stainless steels. It has higher yield and tensile strength than 317L. This low carbon grade steel provides resistance to sensitization during welding and thermal processes. Low carbon content in its composition makes the alloy resistant to inter granular corrosion. It also offers excellent corrosion resistance to organic, sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
The chemical composition of Grade 317LN stainless steel is outlined in the following table.
Element | Content (%) |
Iron, Fe | 63.43 |
Chromium, Cr | 18.2 |
Nickel, Ni | 14 |
Molybdenum, Mo | 4.2 |
Nitrogen, N | 0.15 |

Technology
The properties of 317LN is similar to other conventional austenitic stainless steels, and can therefore, be fabricated in a manner similar to alloys 316L and 317L. Heat treatment of 317LN can be carried out at temperatures ranging from 1080 to1175°C (1975 to 2150°F) followed by rapid water quenching. This grade is not hardenable.
