Introduction

Alloy  304L a T-300 series stainless steel austenitic, which has a minimum of 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Type 304L has a carbon maximum is 0.030. It is the standard "18/8 stainless" that is commonly found in pans and cooking tools. Alloys 304L is the most versatile and widely used alloy in the stainless steel family. Ideal for a wide variety of home and commercial applications, Alloys 304L exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and has a high ease of fabrication, outstanding formability. The austenitic stainless steels are also considered to be the most weldable of the high-alloy steels and can be welded by all fusion and resistance welding processes.

Technology

Machinability
Slow speeds and heavy feeds will minimize this alloys tendencyto work harden, Due to long stringy chips, the use of chipbreakers is advisable. Many companies now offer premiummachinability grades, such as CarTech with their Project 70 and7000 series.

Welding
All fusion and resistance processes have been successfullyemployed in welding 304. AWS E/ER308 or 312 filler metal isrecommended, Its low carbon, means that the is less carbideprecipitation at the weld boundaries resulting in stronger welds.

Hot Working
Forging, heading and other hot working should follow uniformheating to 2100-2300 F(1149-1260 C). Rapid cooling is necessaryto attain maximum corrosion resistance in finished parts.

Cold Working
Readily fabricated by most cold working methods, 304L mayrequire intermediate annealing to avoid cracking or tearing fromradical deformation, Full annealing should follow any operationto reduce internal stress and optimize corrosion resistance.

Annealing
1850-2050 F(1010-1121 c) followed by rapid cooling.

Hardening
This alloy does not respond to heat treatment. Cold work willcause an increase in both hardness and strength.

Applications

304L stainless steel is widely used in the medical field, mainly for the manufacture of medical devices and equipment. 304L stainless steel is a low-carbon version of 304 stainless steel with good corrosion resistance, processing performance and weldability. Its composition includes chromium (18-20%), nickel (8-10.5%) and a small amount of molybdenum (less than 0.75%). Due to its low carbon content, 304L stainless steel can reduce the risk of brittleness and intergranular corrosion in the heat affected zone of the weld during welding.

In the medical field, 304L stainless steel is mainly used in the following aspects:

Medical devices: 304L stainless steel has become an ideal material for the manufacture of medical devices due to its excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Common medical devices include scalpels, surgical scissors, surgical forceps, medical trays, medical trolleys, etc.

In addition, 304L stainless steel is also used to manufacture syringes, catheters, surgical blades, etc.

Pharmaceutical equipment: In the pharmaceutical industry, 304L stainless steel is used to make containers, piping, reactors, operating tables, conveyor belts and other equipment. These devices need to work in an environment prone to stress corrosion and pitting corrosion, and 304L stainless steel can meet these requirements.
