Introduction

INCOLOY is an alloy composed of nickel-iron-chromium, with additions of molybdenum and copper. These alloys are categorized as super alloys and exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. Some of the INCOLOY alloys are specifically made to resist selected reagents. These alloys are capable of functioning even at high temperatures.

INCOLOY alloy 020 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in chemical environments that contain sulphuric acid, chlorides, phosphoric acid and acid. It is easy to fabricate this alloy to form mixing tanks, heat exchangers, pickling equipment etc. The standard forms in which this alloy is available are round, flats, pipe, tube, strip and wire.

Possible Alternative Grades

  • Incoloy 800: This alloy is best used for condensation conditions in ammonia acid-based mediums. It also has high corrosion resistance to HNO3, H2SO4, or its mixed version.
  • Incoloy 800H: This widely used nickel alloy is highly resistant to corrosion with top-notch mechanical properties such as weldability & workability.
  • Incoloy 825: Incoloy 825 or alloy 825 is highly resistant to stress-corrosion from oxidation. It is commonly used in gas pipelines or steam coolers.
  • Incoloy 901: This alloy is known for its age-hardening properties with added titanium & aluminum. It also houses traces of lower carbon & boron.

Characteristic
  • Corrosion Resistance: Incoloy 020 showcases an exceptional resistance to corrosion in environments with sulfuric acid.
  • Crevice Corrosion Resistance: Incoloy alloy features molybdenum as a critical component in the metallic mix. This gives it the feature of crevice corrosion resistance as well as pitting resistance.
  • Reduced Carbide Precipitation: The presence of niobium in the alloy helps reduce the carbide precipitation effect that happens during welding. Hence, it increases its resistance to intergranular corrosion.
  • Decreased Stress-Corrosion: The enhanced nickel content within the alloy allows reduced cracking from stress-corrosion that happens due to the chloride-ion environment.

Processing method

Welding
INCOLOY alloy 020 can be welded by shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and gas metal arc welding. The filler metal is usually an INCONEL alloy.

Hot Working
INCOLOY alloy 020 can be hot worked at temperature ranges of 760-1175°C (1400-2150°F).

Annealing
INCOLOY alloy 020 should be annealed at 982-1010°C (1800-1850°F) for time commensurate with section size /AC.

The INCOLOY alloy 020 is used in the following applications:
