Introduction

AL-6XN (UNS N08367) is a 6% molybdenum (6 Moly), low carbon, nitrogen-bearing super-austenitic stainless alloy. The alloy was originally designed for seawater applications. AL-6XN has also been successfully used in a broad range of very corrosive environments including the rapidly developing biopharm markets.
 

The high strength and corrosion resistance of the AL-6XN alloy make it a better choice than the conventional duplex stainless steels and a cost effective alternative to more expensive nickel-base alloys where excellent formability, weldability, strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

  The following table lists the comparison results of the corrosion resistance of 022Cr21Ni25Mo7N, 00Cr20Ni24Mo6N, AL-6XN stainless steel in some acid media, 316L stainless steel , 317L stainless steel , 904L stainless steel and the famous nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloy Hastelloy C-276 . Obviously, the corrosion resistance of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel is not only better than these stainless steels, but also better than or equal to C-276 Hastelloy alloy.

 In sulfuric acid and hydrogen chloride, 022Cr21Ni25Mo7N, 00Cr20Ni24Mo6N, AL-6XN  stainless steels are better than the tested 904L stainless steel and 654SMO stainless steel, but their use range in sulfuric acid with high chloride ion concentration, especially in hydrochloric acid, is still very narrow, only better than 904L stainless steel, but lower than another 7% Mo type super austenitic stainless steel 654SMO. In hydrogen chloride, the corrosion resistance of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel is still lower than that of 654SMO stainless steel , but better than other stainless steel grades including the tested 2507 super duplex stainless steel .


Pitting

  The pitting corrosion resistance of 022Cr21Ni25Mo7N, 00Cr20Ni24Mo6N, AL-6XN  stainless steel (evaluated by pitting potential and critical pitting temperature) was compared with other stainless steels and 625 alloy ( Inconel 625 ) and G3 alloy ( Hastelloy G3 ). It was found that under the test conditions, the pitting corrosion resistance of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel was better than that of 316L stainless steel, 317L stainless steel, and 904L stainless steel, but similar to that of G3 alloy, and lower than that of 625 alloy. In 6% FeCl3 solution, the pitting corrosion resistance (critical pitting temperature) of AL-6XN stainless steel and other stainless steels before and after welding (TIG welding without wire filling) (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) is better than the influence of welding. The pitting corrosion resistance of AL 6XN stainless steel decreases after welding, but compared with grades with lower molybdenum content (316L stainless steel, 317L stainless steel and 904L stainless steel), AL 6XN stainless steel with high molybdenum content and nitrogen is still the best.


 Crevice corrosion


   By comparing the toughness curves of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel, it can be seen that the reduction in corrosion resistance (pitting and crevice corrosion resistance) of AL-6XN stainless steel occurs before the toughness of this steel decreases, especially at lower temperatures; the corrosion resistance of AL 6XN stainless steel decreases significantly at about 700°C, and this trend is suppressed when the temperature is ≥ 927°C.

   In 6% FeCl 3 solution, the critical crevice corrosion temperature of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel was compared with other stainless steels and corrosion-resistant alloys. It was found that the critical crevice temperature of AL-6XN stainless steel was as high as 43°C, only lower than the nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloy C-276 (00Cr16Ni60Mo16W4). This result shows that AL-6XN stainless steel has good crevice corrosion resistance under the test conditions.

   The conditions for crevice corrosion of (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel and 625 alloy were tested in a critical crevice corrosion solution. The test results show that the conditions for crevice corrosion of AL-6XN stainless steel and nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloy are equivalent, that is, they have similar crevice corrosion resistance.

 Intergranular corrosion

   Since (00Cr20Ni24Mo6N) AL-6XN stainless steel generally contains only about 0.02% carbon, there is little precipitation of chromium carbides. However, when the hot working, heat treatment and welding processes are improper, there is still a risk of intergranular corrosion due to the precipitation of metal phases and Cr2N along the grain boundaries.

   The following table shows the intergranular corrosion data of steel obtained by different intergranular corrosion test methods. It can be seen that the corrosion rate difference between ultra-low carbon austenitic stainless steel and super austenitic stainless steel is not significant except for ASTM A262 F method, but the corrosion rate of nickel-based corrosion-resistant alloy C-276 (00Cr16Ni60Mo16W4) is very high.
