Introduction

Ti 6Al-4V Plate offers a combination of high strength, light weight, formability and corrosion resistance which have made it the most commonly used titanium alloy. It is an alpha+beta alloy that is heat treatable to achieve moderate increases in strength and is recommended for use at service temperatures up to approximately 660°F (350°C). Ti 6Al-4V Plate may be considered in any application where a combination of high strength at low to moderate temperatures, light weight and excellent corrosion resistance are required.

Physical and mechanical properties

Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy Plate commonly exists in alpha, with hcp crystal structure, (SG : P63/mmc) and beta, with bcc crystal structure, (SG : Im-3m) phases. While mechanical properties are a function of the heat treatment condition of the alloy and can vary based upon properties, typical property ranges for well-processed Ti-6Al-4V Plate are shownbelow Aluminum stabilizes the alpha phase, while vanadium stabilizes the beta phase.

Heat treatment of Ti-6Al-4V Plate

Ti-6Al-4V Plate is heat treated to vary the amounts of and microstructure of  and  phases in the alloy. The microstructure will vary significantly depending on the exact heat treatment and method of processing. Three common heat treatment processes are mill annealing, duplex annealing, and solution treating and aging.

 

Fabrication

  • Weldability - Fair
  • Forging - Rough 982°C (1800°F), finish 968°C (1775°F)
  • Annealing - 732°C (1350°F), 4hr, FC to 566°C (1050°F), A.C. F.C. not necessary for bars
  • Solution Heat Treating - Forgings
  • Aging - 904-954°C (1660-1750°F), 5 min-2hrs, W.Q. 538°C (1000°F), 4hr, A.C.


Applications

Ti-6Al-4V (TC4)Plate is widely used in the medical field, mainly for the manufacture of various medical devices and implants. Due to its good biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and high strength, Ti-6Al-4V performs well in the medical field.

Specific Applications
Artificial joints: Ti-6Al-4V Plate is used to manufacture artificial joints such as hip and knee joints. Its high strength and good corrosion resistance enable it to bear the weight of the human body and the load of exercise for a long time without adversely affecting human tissues.

Dental implants: In the field of dentistry, Ti-6Al-4V Plate is used to manufacture implants and abutments, which can be firmly fixed in the jawbone, support dental restorations, and restore the patient's chewing function and oral aesthetics.
Cardiovascular stents: Ti-6Al-4V is also used to manufacture cardiovascular stents, which are implanted in blood vessels through interventional surgery to support narrowed or occluded blood vessels, restore blood circulation, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Biocompatibility and corrosion resistance Ti-6Al-4V Plate has good biocompatibility because a stable oxide layer (titanium dioxide) spontaneously forms on its surface. This oxide layer can effectively isolate the metal from the surrounding biological environment, prevent corrosion and reduce adverse reactions. In addition, Ti-6Al-4V Plate exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a variety of corrosive media, especially in seawater, chlorides and certain acidic environments, which makes it widely used in marine engineering and chemical equipment.
