Introduction

F51 (2205) Duplex Stainless Steel is an austeniyitic-ferric (duplex) stainless steel. Consisng of 22% Chromium and 5% Nickel. F51 (2205) Duplex Stainless Steel is typically dual cerfied to UNS S31803 (318) / S32205 (2205). F51 (2205) Duplex Stainless Steel combines corrosion resistance and higher strength compared other austentic stainless steels, while also having superior ping resistance. It is also suitable in applications in environments of -50°F to +600°F temperature range. F51 (2205) Duplex Stainless Steel does suffer from embrilement and loss of toughness, when exposed to prolonged use in applicaons or environments below -50°F or above +600°F, this is why duplex is not suitable for exposure outside of these ranges.
ASTM A182 F51 equates to UNS S31803. This was the original caption for a 22% Cr duplex stainless steel. However, as explained in an earlier article, manufacturers optimised the composition towards the top end of the limits to improve pitting corrosion resistance. This grade, with a tighter specification, is captioned as F60, equating to UNS S32205. Consequently, S32205 can be dual-certified as S31803, but not vice-versa. It accounts for around 80% of overall duplex stainless steel production. Langley Alloys stocks
ALLOY 25 +, which is  proprietary product that provides 'enhanced machinability as standard'. Our stock range goes from ½" up to 450mm diameter solid bars, plus hollow bars and plates too.

What Is The Difference Between S31803 (F51) And S32205 (F60)?

If you have not heard of F51 and F60 before, they are essentially duplex and super duplex stainless steel grades taken from one of the most widely referenced standards for the supply of stainless steels, ASTM A182. This standard applies to forged or rolled alloy and stainless-steel pipe flanges, forged fittings and valves and parts for high-temperature service. According to ASTM A182, the 'F' in F51 stands for forged.

How To Differentiate Between F51 and F60

Following the development of duplex stainless steels, their initial specification was captured as UNS S31803 (F51). However, a number of the leading manufacturers were consistently producing this grade to the upper end of the allowable specification. This reflected their desire to maximise the corrosion performance of the alloy, aided by the development of the AOD steelmaking process that allowed tighter control of composition. In addition, it also allowed the level of nitrogen additions to be influenced, rather than just present as a background element. Therefore, the highest performing duplex grade sought to maximise the levels of chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo) and nitrogen (N). The difference between a duplex alloy whose composition meets the bottom of the specification, versus one that hits the top of the specification can be several points based upon the formula PREN = %Cr + 3.3 %Mo + 16 % N.

In order to differentiate the duplex stainless steel produced at the top end of the composition range, a further specification was introduced, namely UNS S32205. Duplex stainless steel made to the S32205 (F60) caption will fully meet the S31803 (F51) caption, whereas the reverse is not true. Therefore S32205 (F60) can be dual-certified as S31803 (F51).

Applications

  • Process industry components in acid, phosphoric acid, ethylene oxide, polypropylene & PVC production

  • Marine industry and shipbuilding propellers, shafts, rudders, shaft seals, pumps, bolts, fasteners, valves, instrumentation
  • Oil and chemical tankers
  • Oil & Gas industry pumps, valves, pipe, vessels, wellhead equipment, subsea equipment, separators, heat exchangers
  • Pollution control systems, effluent scrubbing, flue gas desulphurisation (FGD)
  • Waste water treatment, sour water purification
  • Pulp & paper industry applications such as pulp liquor heaters, bleach tower linings, digesters, brownstock washers
  • Food industry applications including brewery piping, evaporators, hot liquor tanks, presses
