Titanium 8-1-1 is a near alpha alloy with aluminum being the alpha stabilizer and the additions of Mo, V, and Fe, which result in a small amount of beta formation. Ti 8-1-1 can provide creep resistance at operating temperatures up to 450°C (842°F). Ti 8-1-1 has the highest modulus and lowest density of all Ti alloys. It is notable not only for its high strength and creep resistance but also for a good stiffness-to-density ratio and toughness. It is typically used (but is not limited to) a variety of jet engine applications such as forged compressor blades and discs.
Titanium 8-1-1 may be either hot or cold-formed. Popular methods include hydro-press, stretch or drop-hammer. It responds similarly to 300 series stainless steel. Hot forming will reduce both the spring-back and required forming forces of Ti 8-1-1 and will increase its overall ductility. The cold working characteristics of Ti 8-1-1 are similar to those of austenitic stainless steel. In multiple forming operations, intermediate stress relieving is recommended to offset Ti 8-1-1's tendency to work harden. Post-work annealing is required to regain optimal performance characteristics.
